Imperium Romanum

Imperium Romanum
Publisher: N/A
Developer: N/A
Website: www.imperium-game.com
Genre: Strategy

This game is going to appeal to a particular kind of gamer, one that enjoys a deep city builder but also doesn't mind a budget war sim tacked on. It's not a bad game but the lack of a campaign and the shoddy way the RTS side has been developed hurt it.

When you think of city building sims you really only think of Sim City at the top of the tree. It’s odd to actually play another title like City Life or any other game that happens to have city building in it. When I ended up with Imperium Romanum, I wasn’t sure what to expect since I had cut my teeth on any sim-style game I could get my hands on. I followed the tutorial to the letter and soon learned that the game is pretty fun as it taught me the skills I required to create my first city, to make it grow and prosper as well as to make sure that the populace were happy and crime was at an all time low.

There are numerous game modes in the game, along with a historical timeline mode that allows you to play through various scenarios. One of my favourite so far has been managing the huge city of Rome from its early infancy into the thriving metropolis and centre of knowledge it should become. There’s a plethora of buildings and the system to choose them is simple. I love radial menus so being able to drop a building down just with a few clicks of the mouse was a god send.

In fact before you go any further, check out the preview of the game. It’ll help explain the things that I will somewhat expand upon.

Imperium Romanum Preview

It’s a veritable tight-rope of choices and decisions when playing this city builder, it only takes the wrong investment to watch your hard won fiscal prosperity to take a tumble and the citizens to turn into an angry fire-wielding screaming mob that need to be taken in hand and pacified (beaten to within an inch of their miserable lives!) by your sublime rule. It’s a nice relaxed game at times but there are moments when you might be pulling out your hair and screaming blue murder at the PC when things go terribly pear-shaped.

What may put people off the game is the lack of direction. It’s an arm-chair general’s kind of game where you can sit back and relax, perfect if you want to cultivate the Roman city of your dreams. If you want a gripping story of the rise and fall of the Roman Empire however, you’re out of luck since the game doesn’t ship with any kind of campaign. What it does give you however is hours of fun if you’re into building cities like I am. You can fine tune your neighbourhoods with just the right placement of buildings and help to upgrade your town hall into something worthy of Ancient Rome.

The more you upgrade, the more you have access to the right kind of technology and the better buildings you can put down. In that way it parallels the seminal Sim City. It doesn’t quite get there though; it falls at the wayside when it becomes more tedium than anything else to slog through yet another objective to find that something else has gone wrong. Don’t get me wrong, I like the game. I would have liked to see more to bring the player into the actual game itself. The tutorial is fantastic really and it has more than enough in the way of gameplay to keep you going city wise.

It’s when the barbarian invasion begins that I start to get annoyed as the rts side of the game hasn’t really been developed beyond a few options. There’s something missing. Perhaps I was expecting to command mighty legions, to be able to have the kind of finite control I have in other games where I can choose various options, many kinds of formations, aggressiveness and build up a suitable army of diverse units. Here I’m relegated to picking a couple of things, clicking on a point on the map and sending my pitiful forces off to battle the raging barbarian hordes in mediocre combat.

It’s such a let down compared to the city building/management side of the game that I wish there was an option to turn the combat off completely or totally ignore it.

What the game loses in the appeal of the combat, it does more than make up for it in the city design and graphical lushness. I was able to crank all the settings to maximum and enjoy an ambient background of little details, flocks of birds, rippling water and so on. It’s all brought to life very well with lots of attention to detail. This is the kind of thing that I like to see in my games, especially now when we have powerful processors and graphics cards to support fully 3d buildings and proper 3d characters.

Not as though sprites don’t have their charm, it’s time for the sprite to step aside fully however and let 3d reign supreme.

Imperium Romanum’s attention to architectural detail is likewise pretty good, the buildings look period and they have a good feel to them. I particularly like the Gladiatorial Arena and the way your town hall evolves as you upgrade it to a Senate and so on. The game is also brought to life with layer upon layer of excellent animations for the various people, workers and life in the city. Every building supports some kind of animation, especially as day passes into night and the various lights come on around the city.

The whole thing can be described visually as beautiful.

The sound work is good, it’s packed with ambient sounds and spot sounds, there’s little in the way of voice acting which probably is a good thing since games of this type tend to suffer from badly portrayed voices by actors who should never work again in anything. At least they’re not as bad as RPG’s though, that odd breed of game where the voice acting (Two Worlds anyone) is even worse than some daytime TV or Soap operas.

I feel that Imperium Romanum is a decent step forwards for this kind of genre, it’s nice to see a city building game where there’s a lot going on visually as well as under the hood as the various AI systems manage the day to day lives of your little Romans. It’s just a shame that the lack of tactical options in the war side of the game detract from the actual game itself, the battle animations for this particular segment could have been done a whole lot better as well.

I say this time and time again but people could learn a thing or too by adding synch kills, random death animations and combat animations to defeated units. A little bit of thought in that area wouldn’t go amiss and might make a so-so game even better. It isn’t always about eye candy and fortunately Imperium Romanum has the depth of city construction gameplay to support it. It’s not a game that you will like if you’re into core RTS or just core Sim City style games. If you want a combination of a basic RTS tacked onto a great and functioning city builder, then Imperium Romanum could be the ticket for you if you’re into your history and especially the Roman culture.

thanx

Crysis (PC)

Crysis (PC)
Publisher: Electronic Arts
Developer: Crytek
Website: N/A
Genre: First-Person Shooter
Release Date: 2007

The most likely thing to strike you when the first cut scene goes into actual gameplay on Crysis is that it's very pretty. That's of course assuming your graphics card doesn't have a fit at the amount of stuff it has to render and summarily explode. If you're fortunate enough to have a machine able to render the game closer to its upper settings though, you will often be impressed by the game world. The flora and fauna, buildings, vehicles, allies and enemy combatants are all things of beauty... until they're rendered asunder by your murder and wanton mayhem.

Not only are they lovingly detailed but they are also far more interactive. Enemy combatants can be grabbed, tossed or killed silently, (some) trees can be mown down and (some) buildings can be smashed apart. It's rather rewarding to toss a grenade and have a house collapse or use a machine gun and bring down a line of palm trees. Naturally, Half Life 2 had the physics first and the pretty graphics first but Crysis has raised the bar on both. The environment isn't quite as destructible as it might be... but then, this game is already beyond the reach of most without rather new graphics cards... so, presumably the ability to mass murder was paramount over EVERYTHING being reducible to rubble.

Not that Crysis forces you to run around like Rambo, single handedly taking down the entire Korean People's Army or alien hordes by yourself. Stealth and avoidance are perfectly valid tactics here - mostly thanks to the nanotech suit you have. It's rather strange to start a game with essentially the full gamut of abilities but Crysis lets you use all the suit's functions almost from the word go.

The four modes it offers being:

Super speed - running and shooting faster.
Super strength - increased melee damage, jumping higher and tossing stuff further.
Super durability - considerably increasing your ability to take damage.
Cloak - rendering you invisible to enemies.

It also fills up your health over time and offers night vision... Naturally, all these abilities use energy when active. Cloak is easily the most useful, allowing you to take out one or two enemies and then hide and then rinse and repeat until all enemies are dispatched... or simply avoid enemies altogether. Strength is useful for getting onto rooftops and navigating to otherwise inaccessible areas - and punch enemies to dead... speed seems of limited use, given that it can be expended so quickly. Durability is pretty much the "vanilla" flavour here and makes you akin to some kind of... Master Chief.

The suit isn't the only interesting angle to the gameplay. Weapons are all customisable - to various degrees, with different modules you can stick on them. Different types of scopes, flash lights, laser pointers, grenade launchers... nothing that will make them a great deal more efficient but it's a nice touch... even though sticking a sniper scope on a shotgun may be about as useful as putting a rocket engine on a carrier pigeon.

So, you have your super suit and your sniper scoped shotgun and you're ready to murder Korean soldiers like it's going out of fashion... and this game let's you do it in style. Thankfully the KPA has hundreds of them just waiting to meet any number of ends at your hands. Initially, you're just skirmishing. Running around the pretty island, trying to find some wayward hostages... but of course, the course of true gaming seldom runs smooth and you'll soon find yourself in full on hostilities with the KPA, performing tactical missions and such. This is really where the game excels and easily pushes for a place in your FPS affections.

The maps are large and the paths of attack varied. You can creep through the jungle, all sneaky and sly - not killing anyone at all. Or just hop in a vehicle, drive along the roads, mow down the soldiers and smash buildings. Not that that approach is necessarily the best one... there can't be any doubt that your supersuit affords you many advantages over the hapless KPA troops but on Hard difficulty, you can't just wade in and expect to win against a dozen troops - or even a half dozen.

The AI isn't quite as impressive as that in F.E.A.R. though and it's not that uncommon to see it sometimes see it looking in the wrong way when you shoot someone or cloak, although - frequently they'll continue to fire at your last position or creep around on the alert. Fairly competent, certainly and given the large scales of the map, quite effective although it might have been nice to see troops running away but all in all, solid AI.

As implied - there are aliens... that's obvious pretty much from the start but they don't really debut until two thirds of the way through. It's at this point the game goes all Xen on us. What made the game fun was running around large maps, shooting other humans - as sociopathic as that might sound... but after a headache inducing float through an alien city (they clearly forgot to pay their gravity bills) the Koreans are gone and here come the aliens.

The aliens look copyright infringingly close to the "squiddies" from The Matrix. Except they're turquoise instead of red... oh and they fire flechettes instead of using lasers... but otherwise very similar. The aliens like it nice and cold, so the island is turned to ice for this segment of the game... as you might imagine, it's fairly standard - aliens are attacking, get the hell out of dodge. The excitement of the initial part of the game is more or less totally killed - you run from point A to point B. Most of the time, there is little point in doing anything other than running away - being big and metal, the robots take considerably more ammo to go down and their aim is pretty piss poor... so there isn't exactly a reason to hang around unless it's required as an objective.

The game ends with a bit of running around an aircraft carrier and then TWO boss fights... all of which feels totally at odds with the initial segments of the game. While that felt somewhat challenging, the aliens just felt like a tedious objective to slog through and quite at odds with the fun of the tropical island. It's not QUITE the jumping puzzles of Xen or the animal infested final level of Deus Ex but it really robs the game of any greatness.

That isn't to say the game isn't enjoyable - when it excels, it's excelling on several levels but then it feels as if the story of aliens became MORE important than the enjoyability of the game... shooting Matrix style robots is not fun and flying a VTOL that handles like a cow against them is a lesson in tedium. It really feels as if the guy in charge of the level design got up to entering the alien city and then went out on a break and by the time he got back, everyone else had rushed out the last bunch of levels.

It's not the first game that flags after initially impressive levels and it surely won't be the last but with Crysis, it feels as if it actually missed out on the opportunity to be a seminal single player campaign by resorting to the old "Oh, aliens!" shtick and really... boss battles aren't what games like Crysis should be about. Still, despite that the impressive visuals, physics and gameplay in the first segment of this game still shine through and it's easy to find yourself regaling people about your escapades. Anyone with a penchant for supersoldiers or FPSs should play it... just be ready for the little bit of alien heart break.

Hints, Tips & Tricks

Unlocking doors

When you go to bed after Memory Block 2, you will notice your closet door is open. Hit any button to get a piece of paper Desmond notes as a code. The code will unlock your bedroom door which will allow you to be able to go out as often as you like after you are put to bed, as well as to open the meeting room area. You can also pick up various items to unlock Lucy's password.

Easier interrogation

After you get the "target" to a safe area to "interrogate" them, punch them first then "grab" them for faster completions. It will take about two grabs to quickly finish them. However, into the last three quarters of the game you may have to grab them up to, but exceeding, four times.

Easy fights

Only attempt this technique if they are fluent in the Rank 2 skill "Counter" and they have enough synchronization bars (a.k.a., life bars). One and a half rows of bars will do. When in battle, equip your hidden blade. With this equipped, all of your counters will score an instant kill. You can even instantly kill tougher ranked guards (for example, the Teutonic guards in Acre when hunting Sebrand). Also, most of the time using the hidden blade in battle will scare the last one or two (even three if you are lucky) guards, causing them to run away. However because you do not have a weapon that is sufficient enough to block a full sized enemy blade, all incoming attacks will hurt you.

Escaping from guards

Go to a high roof when chased. Kill the guards that appear. After a few kills they will either run or give up.

Defeating William of Montferrat in Acre

After the guards (or most of them) leave William, drop down from the castle and slay William. Afterward, "de-target" or deselect, and run up into the castle buildings and battlement to get away. This is the fastest way of completing the mission.

Defeating the Master

When fighting the Master he will take away your ability to use radar and make it difficult to see. This also allows him to hit you once and kill you. Lock on to him and use a throwing knife against him. This will take away his power to blind you and make him easier to kill.

ENHANCED REALITY SYSTEM (E.R.S.)
E.R.S. is in-game technology that helps turn novice aviators into elite pilots of the future. The Enhanced Reality System is the core of the HAWX flight experience: aircraft interception trajectories, incoming missile detection, anti-crash system, damage assessment, tactical map, and weapons trajectory control. E.R.S. also allows players to issue orders to their squadron and other units, making this system as iconic to HAWX as the Cross-Com system is to Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter®!

ASSISTANCE MODE

Players can ease into their flight missions and gain a level of comfort with the use of the assistance mode. Once employed, players can take full advantage of their technological support through the E.R.S and gain maximum piloting security. If the situation calls for the player to unleash the full potential of the aircraft, the assistance mode can be switched off and all safety features will be deactivated. This comes with increased risks, but allows the player advanced dogfighting maneuvers and stunning third-person views.

REVOLUTIONARY MULTIPLAYER

For the first time ever in the air-combat genre, players will be able to experience the entire solo campaign with seamless JUMP IN/JUMP OUT functionality. In PVP mode, players can challenge each other in intense dog-fighting sessions and find out who's the top gun. Winning players are rewarded with experience points and money to unlock more weapons.

REALISM AND TECHNOLOGY

Players have the opportunity to take the throttle of over 50 famous aircrafts, and take them over real world locations & cities in photo-realistic environments created with the best commercial satellite data on the civilian market.

thanks!!
